Best in Show: Photographer, Luke Stephenson

The Incomplete Dictionary of Show Birds by Luke Stephenson

Portrait photographer Luke Stephenson is particularly interested in examining the uniquely British way of life; their eccentricities, customs, and competitions. His subjects range from competitors of the World Beard and Moustache Championships, to the childhood iconic Mister Whippy (or Mister Softy in the UK) ice cream vans. In his recent series, The Incomplete Dictionary of Show Birds, Stephenson focused his energies exploring the fascinating world of bird fanciers over a three year period. Experimenting with five different types of photo booth before mastering the perfect design, Stephenson finally had the perfect conditions for his portraits. What emerges is a colourful and engaging series of portraits capturing the beauty, elegance, and charming personalities of a small group of fine show birds. Plucking the birds from their natural habitat and instead using complementary coloured backdrops, places absolute focus on each subject’s gloriously vivid hues and detailing of their plumage.

Currently on show in the historic village of Clevaux, Luxembourg, as part of the Cité de l’image which runs public exhibitions around independent photographic projects of local and international talent. The outdoor exhibition on Grand-Rue runs until 14 September 2012. Prints are available through the Photographer’s Gallery in London.
