Affectionately known to Christchurch folk as Mr Mod, Ross Morrison has been collecting and restoring mid-century furniture for over thirty years and selling these highly collectable icons from a converted 1950s garage in suburbia. Since the earthquake we have seen the trucks come and go from the St Martins’ premise, as furniture has been moved out of the showrooms and into the shipping container now parked in its forecourt. As local residents and fans of Mr Mod, we were worried we may never see them again. So, when I received this invitation to the auction of Ross’s private collection, it tugged the corners of my mouth skyward. Ross’s impressive private collection of modernist furniture, decorative items and antiques has been carefully edited, no doubt (as I know he had a huge warehouse full to the brim), down to just over 200 items. If you live in Auckland, count yourself lucky for the chance to peruse one of New Zealand’s foremost modernist collections. The Ross Morrison collection can also be viewed on-line and at Art +Object over the next six days. The chance to own a piece of iconic modernist design will come this Tuesday night at Art +Object or via absentee bids either via email (by filling out a form on the website) or by telephone.
For Christchurch peeps just dying for a dose of classic mid-century design, Mr Mod plans to re-open his doors in a few weeks time. Watch this space!
